Biography
Dr Gimelli is a cardiologist and nuclear medicine specialist with a specific interest in cardiac imaging. She has multiple senior roles both in her home institution and in several scientific and professional societies.
She is the clinical lead of the Nuclear Cardiology unit, FTGM. Since her appointment in 2010, the unit grew +100% (from 500 to 1,000 scans/year). Furthermore, she has been active in medical education and has been leading the Nuclear Cardiology clinical training programme from 2012 at the University of Pisa, Italy. She also leads the curriculum of nuclear cardiology for cardiology trainees.
During the pandemic, Dr Alessia Gimelli co-founded Cardiac Imaging Agora with Prof Wael Jaber. It is a free platform where experts in cardiac imaging share their knowledge and experience to improve patient’s care.
Dr Gimelli has participated in many clinical research projects and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals.
Her involvement in the ESC includes board member of the European Association Cardiovascular Imaging during the last 6 terms (Vice-Chair of the Nuclear Cardiology and cardiac CT section, then Chair of the Nuclear Cardiology and cardiac CT section and Vice-President of EACVI, and as Treasurer of the EACVI), member of the ESC Advocacy Committee, member of the ESC Congress Programme Committee, Member of the ESC Media Committee, and member of various Task Force (EACVI Task force on Governance, ESC/ EACVI joint task Force on regulatory governance of diagnostic imaging devices - CT/ Nuclear Imaging, EACVI Task Force on Women).
She is also Section Editor of the new European Heart Journal Open for the Imaging Section, the Associate Editor of the “Imaging” journal and I contribute on the editorial boards to the European Heart Journal Cardiovascular Imaging, Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, International Journal of Cardiac Imaging.
In October 2019, Dr Gimelli won the ESC grant and attended the Women Transforming Leadership Programme (WTLP) run by the Saïd Business School of the University of Oxford (UK). In November 2021, Dr Gimelli won the “2022 Women as One Escalator Awards Mentor Match Award” in the mentor category.
Dr Alessia Gimelli is on the editorial board for US Cardiology Review.
