Biography

Bryan Williams is Chair of Medicine at UCL and Chief Scientific and Medical Officer at the British Heart Foundation. He is also a Consultant Physician at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) where he was previously Director of the NIHR UCLH/UCL Biomedical Research Centre and Director of Research for UCLH (2014-2023).

Prof Williams research and specialist clinical practice is in the field of hypertension in which he is recognised as one of the world's leading authorities and is credited with driving changes in clinical practice globally. He has been a NHS Consultant Physician in front line care for 40 years. He has received numerous national and international awards and was the recipient of the Times Higher Education University award, for “Outstanding Innovation and Technology” 2011 and the Sleight Award (2014) by the European Society of Hypertension for his "outstanding contribution to research, education and clinical practice in the field of hypertension" and 2021 World Hypertension League and WHO Research Award for contribution to hypertension research globally. He received the Presidents award from the Royal College of Physicians in 2023 for his outstanding contribution to the NHS. In 2022 and 2023, he was listed by Clarivate as one of the world's most influential and highly cited scientists in clinical research. In the King's 2024 New Years Honours he as awarded an OBE for services to medicine.
