Personal History
Dr Michael Sol Firstenberg was born in 1968 and grew up in northeast Ohio.8
He is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Director of Research and Special Projects at the William Novick Global Cardiac Alliance and Assistant Professor of Surgery and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Integrative Medical Sciences at Northeast Ohio Medical University.
Outside of work, Dr Firstenberg enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his son and his Golden Retriever.8
Academic History
Dr Firstenberg received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Chicago. He then graduated from Case Western Reserve University Medical School, Cleveland (OH, USA) in 1996, where he was an elected member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.7
He did his Residency in General Surgery at Case Western Reserve University University Hospitals from 1996 to 2003.6 From 1999-2001, he was a Special Imaging Fellow in the Department of Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic where he studied the quantitative and qualitative assessment of systolic and diastolic ventricular function.7
He also completed fellowships in Thoracic & Cardiac Surgery at The Ohio State University from 2003 to 2005 and The Cleveland Clinic from 2006 to 2007.1, 2
Career Overview
Dr Firstenberg is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center (Ascension) in Appleton, Wisconsin. He provides surgical treatment for heart and blood vessel disease, including heart valve and structural heart damage. 3
As a faculty member at Ohio State University, he was active in research, program development, fellow/resident/student education and adult cardiac surgery.4 He is currently working as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Integrative Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Akron. Dr Firstenberg is also the co-inventor of BiOAID, N95-grade surgical masks and KN95 adhesive filters designed to reduce waste, cost and supply chain interruptions.5
He currently serves as a Chair of the American College of Cardiology Credentialing and Member Services Committee and is an active member of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (AATS) and the American College of Academic International Medicine (ACAIM). He has edited 12 books, authored 24 chapters and more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts and abstracts. Dr Firstenberg has also lectured worldwide on topics ranging from medical leadership, COVID-19, endocarditis and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).1
