Biography
Prof Tom Marwick is the Director of Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia.
Prof Marwick completed his medical and cardiology training in Australia, followed by an Imaging Fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, a PhD at the University of Louvain, Belgium, and a Masters in Public Health at Harvard.
Currently serving as the Director of Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Prof Marwick has carved out a remarkable career, dividing his time between Australia (formerly at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research in Hobart and as Professor of Medicine and Head of Cardiovascular Imaging Research Centre at the University of Queensland) and the USA (previously as Head of Cardiovascular Imaging at Cleveland Clinic).
Prof Marwick has supervised approximately 30 research higher degree students, mainly in clinical studies, with 22 completed PhDs under his guidance. He played a pivotal role in initiating stress echocardiography and has contributed to the prognostic evidence underlying cardiovascular imaging. His current research focuses on early cardiovascular disease detection and the cost-effective application of cardiac imaging techniques for treatment selection and monitoring.
With over 1000 publications, including papers, reviews, chapters, and editorials, Prof Marwick holds esteemed positions as an Associate Editor at JACC and Deputy Editor at JACC-Cardiovascular Imaging. Recognized for his outstanding contributions, he has been awarded more than fifty significant research grants and prestigious honors such as the Simon Dack Award from the American College of Cardiology in 2009, the RT Hall Prize in 2006, and the Kempson Maddox Lecture in 2011 by the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.
