Biography
Mr. Toufan Bahrami is a leading senior consultant in cardiac surgery based in London, celebrated nationally and internationally for his expertise in minimally invasive and endoscopic keyhole cardiac procedures. His specialties include mitral valve repair, aortic and root surgeries, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and complex reoperations for challenging heart conditions.
Medical Training and Expertise
Mr. Bahrami graduated from Paris' prestigious Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital, achieving first place in the French national examination for medical specialization, le concours d’internat. He trained under Professor Alain Carpentier, a pioneer of mitral valve repair techniques.
After relocating to the UK, Mr. Bahrami advanced his training and held consultant positions at Hammersmith Hospital, St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and the London Chest Hospital. Since 2001, he has been based at Harefield Hospital, where he worked alongside Sir Professor Magdi Yacoub. Mr. Bahrami spearheaded the hospital’s minimally invasive and endoscopic cardiac surgery program, focusing on mitral valve repair since 2010. He also serves as an honorary consultant at four NHS hospitals in Surrey, Buckinghamshire, and Bedfordshire.

Mr. Bahrami has been instrumental in advancing endoscopic and minimally invasive heart surgery, including:
- Performing the first endoscopic vein harvesting surgery and mini-thoracotomy aortic valve replacement in the UK.
- Achieving a world first with a minimally invasive artificial heart implantation in 2009.
- Pioneering endoscopically assisted multiple valve surgeries and CABG through minimal access.
- Developing the MIDCAB technique, performing CABG through a mini incision on the left chest while the heart beats.

Over his 22-year career, Mr. Bahrami has performed more than 4,000 procedures, including 1,500 minimally invasive cardiac surgeries. Mr. Bahrami is deeply involved in cardiac surgery research, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals on topics like valve repair and transplantation.
