Improving Outcomes in Diabetes: Focus on SGLT2 Inhibitors. A Medical Experts Discussion

Dr Jas Gill is an award-winning GP in North West London. She is a GP with Special Interest in Cardiology at The Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. 

Her previous appointments include Clinical Lead for Diabetes in a London Clinical Commissioning Group through which she has helped shape diabetes care across North West London.  She has represented at the Diabetes All Party Parliamentary Group.  She has published research in diabetes and is author of multiple medical books.

Dr Gill has helped setup and delivers diabetes workshops to many patients and understands the importance of mindset and patient empowerment in order to enable behaviour change.  She values the challenge and rewards of supporting patients throughout their journey.

Dr Andrew Frankel has been working as a consultant nephrologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust since 1995. He has experience in managing all aspects of kidney disease but has a particular interest in relation to the management of diabetes in the context of kidney disease. Over the years he has maintained a significant research interest in relation to diabetes and kidney, both in terms of how diabetes affects the kidneys leading to deterioration in kidney function, but also in relation to how the presence of kidney disease influences the management of diabetes.  Because of this experience, Dr Frankel has played a significant role in the development of national guidelines on the management of diabetes in the context of kidney disease. He is a regular speaker both locally and nationally and indeed internationally in relation to matters pertaining to diabetes and the kidney.

Professor Derek Connolly is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and the Director of Research and Development at Birmingham City Hospital. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Birmingham, UK.

He trained in Cambridge, London, Edinburgh and San Diego where he was a Carnegie Scholar. He has a first-class degree in Pharmacology from the University of Edinburgh where he was the Brunton medallist and Keasbey Bursary holder. His PhD in molecular cardiology is from the University of Cambridge. He is the Chief or Primary Investigator of multiple large trials in Cardiovascular medicine. He developed one of the UK's first primary angioplasty programmes and one of the UK's largest cardiac CT programmes.

Su Down is a Nurse Consultant in Diabetes and is the Clinical Lead for the Intermediate Diabetes community service in Somerset.  Her Diabetes nursing career started in 1989, when she set up the diabetes specialist nursing service in Yeovil District Hospital.  Su took up the role of Nurse Consultant in 2005 and played a key part in redesigning the diabetes service across the whole of Somerset.  She continues to work tirelessly to evolve and improve this service to cope with the growing demands of the health care economy.

Nationally she is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Diabetes Nursing and joint Vice Chair of the PCDS (Primary Care Diabetes Society). Former national roles have included being a TREND associate, board member of FIT (Forum for Injection Technique) and committee member of the Health Care Professionals Council of Diabetes UK.
