Faculty Biographies
Lucas Boersma
Cardiac Electrophysiologist
Prof Lucas Boersma is a cardiologist/electrophysiologist at St. Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein and a Professor of Cardiology at the University of Amsterdam, NL. In his research, Prof Lucas Boersma has primarily focused on transcatheter treatment of atrial fibrillation. Prof Lucas Boersma is the chairman of the Netherlands Society of Cardiology (NVVC) Knowledge Agenda Committee.
Prof Boersma graduated from Medical School in 1996 at the University of Maastricht. In the same year he finished his PHD on Ventricular Tachycardia in the Rabbit Heart. He completed his Cardiology specialty training in 2000 at St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein and his subspecialty training in Electrophysiology in 2001 at Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, ES. He was Head of the Cardiology Department from 2008-2016, as well as Medical Manager of the Cardiovascular Unit from 2011-2017.
Atul Verma
Director of Cardiology
Dr Atul Verma is currently Director of Cardiology at the McGill University Health Centre & McGill University, Montreal, CA. He is head of the Heart Rhythm Programme at Southlake Regional Health Centre and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, US. He is also an Associate Scientist with the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute.
Specialising in complex arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, he has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles including in The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr Verma has co-chaired the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Atrial Fibrillation Guidelines Committee and contributed to the HRS/EHRA Consensus Document on Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation. He currently leads and participates in multiple international clinical trials.
Stephen Tuohy
Cardiac Electrophysiologist
Dr Stephen Tuohy is a consultant cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist at The Beacon Hospital Dublin, IE. The Beacon Hospital is the largest volume cardiac ablation centre in Ireland, and one of the most technologically advanced private hospitals in all of Europe.
Dr Tuohy also practices at Blackrock Health Galway Clinic, Bon Secours Galway and Galway University Hospital. A graduate of the Cleveland Clinic Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship programme and previously appointed as Attending Cardiac Electrophysiologist in Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine and Assistant Professor of Medicine Tufts University Boston before returning to Ireland in 2020.
Dr Tuohy has multiple presentations and peer reviewed publications in the field of cardiac electrophysiology. He has a special interest in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and management of atrial fibrillation
