Faculty Biographies
Stefan Anker
Professor of Cardiology
Prof Stefan Anker is professor of (Tissue) Homeostasis in Cardiology & Metabolism at Charité Berlin, Germany, since June 2017. Prodigious researcher who has authored more than 1,000 articles. He has also won several prizes, including the 2018 Copernicus Prize of German DFG & Polish FNP. In October 2020, he was awarded a Doctor honoris causa of Medical University Wroclaw, Poland.
Prof Anker has been serving on the board of the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the ESC since 2006 and was HFA President from 2012 to 2014. He currently chairs the HFA committee on regulatory affairs. He is founding Editor-in-Chief of the first open-access heart failure journal, ESC Heart Failure. Prof. Anker has served on several ESC Guideline task forces.

John JV McMurray
Professor of Cardiology
Prof John McMurray is Professor of Medical Cardiology and Deputy Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow, and honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. A graduate of Manchester University, Prof McMurray completed postgraduate research at the University of Dundee.
Prof McMurray is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association as well as the medical Royal Colleges in Edinburgh and Glasgow and the Royal Society of Edinburgh and UK Academy of Medical Sciences.
Justin Ezekowitz
Dr. Ezekowitz, an accomplished professional in the field of cardiology, serves as the co-director of the Canadian VIGOUR Centre at the University of Alberta. He has spearheaded the establishment of five new heart failure clinics across Alberta to enhance access to specialized services. Furthermore, he plays a pivotal role in co-chairing the heart failure care pathway initiative as part of Alberta Health Services Strategic Clinical Networks.
Dr. Ezekowitz's clinical focus centers on cardiology, with a primary emphasis on heart failure. He practices at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, where he contributes to the Heart Function Clinic.
In the realm of research, Dr. Ezekowitz dedicates his efforts to acute and chronic heart failure, particularly in individuals with heart "pump" issues or end-stage heart disease. Piotr Ponikowski
Head of the Department of Heart Diseases
Piotr Ponikowski is Head of the Department of Heart Diseases, Wroclaw Medical University and Head of the Cardiology Department at the Center for Heart Diseases at 4th Military Hospital, Wroclaw, Poland. His research interests mainly include heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease and cardiac arrhythmias. He has been involved in numerous research projects, such as the benefits of physical rehabilitation in patients with chronic HF, assessment of metabolic derangements in HF (with special interest in iron deficiency), evaluation of reflex control in the cardiorespiratory system in order to optimise assessment and management of patients with HF. He has been involved in numerous clinical trials as main investigator, member of international steering committees, endpoint committees and advisory boards.
Carolyn Lam
Professor and Senior Consultant
Prof Carolyn Lam is a Senior Consultant at the Department of Cardiology and Director of Women's Heart Health at the National Heart Centre Singapore, having pioneered the first Women’s Heart Clinic in Singapore. Prof Lam is a world-renowned specialist in heart failure (particularly heart failure with preserved ejection fraction [HFpEF]). Her work in the PARAGON-HF and EMPEROR-Preserved trials led to the first FDA-approved treatment for HFpEF and the first robustly positive clinical outcomes trial in HFpEF to-date.
